Powroznik Outlasts Field to Win First BASS Elite Event
Berkley rookie punches ticket to 2015 Bassmaster Classic
Jacob Powroznik is a talented angler. In his brief history on the B.A.S.S. elite series, the young pro has eight tournaments under his belt and has finished in the money every time he has competed. The Port Haywood, Va., native displayed his fishing prowess on Toledo Bend this past weekend by winning with a four-day total weight of 79 pounds, 12 ounces.
"I can't believe this year I am having," said Powroznik. "I've had a great year, but to punch my ticket to next years Classic is a really big deal. You don't get many opportunities to win one of these events. It's so hard to do with the quality of competition out here."
Although his stats suggest he is a season veteran, he is actually a rookie on the Elite series tour. Powroznik qualified for the elites by finishing second in the BASS Opens Northern Division point standings. Currently, he is number four in the Angler of the Year standings and leading the Rookie of the Year standings.
The Berkley pro angler targeted spawning fish with a Berkley PowerBait Power Hawg. He rigged it with a 4/0 hook with a ½-ounce tungsten weight.
"The 4-inch Power Hawg is my favorite bed-fishing bait," said Powroznik. "It falls straight down without veering off its intended path. With this bait anglers can count on hitting the target without worry that is off to one side or the other. With bed fishing, anglers have to hit one key spot to get the fish to bite, and I feel the Power Hawg allowed me to find the small spot on the bed that drove fish crazy."
The next stop for the Bassmaster Elite Series is May 15-18 in Russellville, Ark., on Lake Dardanelle.
