The clear waters at Escanaba means that the Pros will most likely rely on finesse style fishing with Berkley Fireline or Nanofil tagged with a 100% Fluorocarbon leader. Fireline and Nanofil will help the pros make longer casts and provide the sensitivity needed to detect subtle strikes. Bass are unlikely to spot fluorocarbon because it comes close to the refractive index of water making it nearly invisible.
Finesse fishing gives anglers the opportunity to entice spooky bass to strike. This strategy uses spinning gear, small jig heads, and drop shot rigs. Popular baits for this technique include Gulp! 3" Minnows along with Havoc Bottom Hopper and Money Maker.

Berkley Powerbait 3" Power Tubes and the Havoc 4" Smash Tube can be cast and slowly worked along the bottom, another attractive strategy for cold weather bass fishing. The baits closely resemble the Goby, an abundant species that bass love to eat.
Here’s a video from Brandon Palanuik about the Money Maker, the bait he designed and how it is best used:
We wish all our Berkley Pros luck in the upcoming tournament!
