Berkley Pro Duckett Wins Bass Event

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Berkley® pro Boyd Duckett earned his fourth tour-level victory this past weekend. The Demopolis, Ala., native weighed in over 62-pounds of fish during the four-day event at Oneida Lake. The Berkley pro cashed a $100,000 check for his winning effort, edging fellow Elite Series pro Randy Howell by a mere 6 ounces.

Heading into the event, Duckett was sitting at 53rd place in the Angler of the Year race, just outside the cutoff mark for qualification for the Bassmaster Classic. His only chance to guarantee himself a spot was to win the final event of the year.

"There was a ton of pressure on all the guys fishing today, especially those that don't have a spot in the Classic," said Duckett. "A few ways ensure that you've got your spot locked for the Classic, and I needed one. I got that today with the win.

Summer months take their toll on bass and downsizing tackle becomes important when trying to entice more bites, especially big bites. Duckett lightened up to claim his victory on Oneida.

"I went down to 10-pound Berkley Trilene® 100% Fluorocarbon and a small 3-inch PowerBait® Crazy Legs Chigger Craw," said Duckett. "Going smaller really brought on the bigger bites I needed to pull this one out. It is amazing how far I've come from a brutal season last year. I really want to relish this win and focus my attention on the post season and Classic next year."

Duckett wasn't the only Berkley pro enjoying the Oneida Lake atmosphere; Scott Rook (3rd), Ott DeFoe (5th), Jason Quinn (8th) and Fletcher Shryock finished eleventh.

The next Elite Series event is set for September 20-23 and launches out of Decatur, Ill. The top 8 in Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Standings qualified this past weekend. Berkley pros participating in the post season include Ott Defoe, Todd Faircloth and Matt Herren. An additional four anglers will make it in by fan votes. Voting will begin Tuesday, August 28th on Bassmaster.com
